A brace from Harvey Barnes was enough for Newcastle to secure a standout win against Manchester City to damage the visitors’ burgeoning title hopes.

Both sides traded early blows from practically the opening whistle as Barnes and Haaland missed early chances, and that set the tone for a superb 90.

The same duo were guilty of missing two brilliant chances later on, with Barnes missing a sitter from a few yards out and Haaland hitting straight at Pope as both sides spurned huge opportunities and the first half ended level.

And while the second half started with less intensity, it burst into life all of a sudden with three goals in a seven-minute spell that came to settle the match.

Barnes opened the scoring with a superbly placed effort into the corner, though Ruben Dias equalised just two minutes later as he squeezed in a shot following pinball in the box.

However neither side had time to take stock before the Newcastle man found the winner, bagging his brace by bundling in Guimaraes’ rebound to life the Magpies into 14th in the Premier League.

Liverpool’s title defence is over – how much lower can they go?

Here’s the report from the other big game of the day then...

Even when Liverpool managed to repeat one of their feats from last season, they picked the wrong one. They lost to Nottingham Forest at Anfield last year, a setback that did not prevent Arne Slot’s side from winning the title. They did so again, but now Liverpool languish in the bottom half. If their dismal title defence was not already over, it is now.

“I can never come up with enough excuses for us to come up with the results we have,” said Slot. “That is far from good enough and I am responsible for that.” The same logic underlined that it was another historic achievement for Sean Dyche, who masterminded Burnley’s first win at Anfield since 1974 and, now, Forest’s biggest ever. “Of course it is to be enjoyed,” he said.

But not for Slot. It was an awful afternoon for him, capped by the now-familiar catcalls of visiting fans predicting his sacking. “Playing at home and losing 3-0 is a very, very, very bad result,” he said. That may have been compounded by the context.

Dias confused over second goal

City defender Ruben Dias had this to say on the second goal:

"Out of all the decisions, only the second goal. I think we need to make it make sense because where's the sense in their player pushing our goalkeeper outside the goal? What are we allowing, and for how long?

"Sometimes you allow it, sometimes you don't. Where's the rule? What can you actually do?

"The second goal, Gigio is in his place, he's being pushed out. And there's no consequence. It's allowed. I had the chance to see it back, I didn't even realise it on the pitch.

"I found it weird that he was out of position, so we immediately knew something was wrong. But I managed to see the review and it's Barnes pushing him away from the goal. We're so picky with certain contacts, but one like this with the keeper, you allow it? It is what it is. If that's the rule, fine. But let us do the same.

"Back in the day, this was a foul. Now apparently it's allowed. People are going to say I'm finding excuses but it's nothing like it. Today Newcastle were better and they deserved the win. because of that, they were allowed to score more chances than us. I terms of the rule, there needs to be a rule."

More from Howe

This is what Howe said to Sky after a huge win:

"We are delighted to win today. I think the heart, endeavour and attitude of our performance today, when you compare it to Brentford when we looked tired and flat, that was a big upturn in terms of the normal way we play. That will give us a massive lift in what is a tough Premier League season this year. That should give us a lift for the games to come.

"Whatever strategy you pick, Manchester City will have chances against that. In the first 30 seconds, Harvey has a chance to score and you know you are on a knife edge like we were at times today. It is hard to keep Haaland quiet for 98 minutes."

On Bruno Guimaraes, he adds: "I think he is an outstanding player. He is a brilliant leader and very positive person. You are looking for your leaders to set the standard. I thought he was at the heartbeat of a lot of our play."

"We fell a long way short of our standards and now the task is to keep that identity away from home."

Howe: 'We were brave'

Eddie Howe spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live after the match too, and he had this to say:

“That doesn't sound good that, 19 games. I'm well aware of my record against Manchester City, that is something I take no pride in really. Trying to figure out a way to beat them is very, very difficult.

"Even today's game, it was so tight. The margins in Premier League games against them are so fine, but we came out on the right side today. I thought it was a great performance from the players, full of energy, heart and bravery. I'm delighted with how we played."

On how he broke his duck against City, he explains: "The mindset was key and the attitude. The energy was back that was missing against Brentford and West Ham. Our running ability and power was there. Our technical ability was there too, which hasn't always been the case.

"We were brave in our approach. We tried to be aggressive and we got rewarded that at times, they punish you for that at times, so you are always on a bit of a knife-edge against them. Thankfully Nick [Pope] made some good saves when needed them and we got the goals at good times,” he added.

More from Guardiola

Here’s more from Pep Guardiola:

"Newcastle is a top side, top players, top manager so unfortunately tonight we could not make the momentum that we had. It was entertaining game, we both had chances and then there was a momentum shift and ultimately we couldn't win.

"Both keepers were good and after we missed chances. It was an entertaining game with many chances. We were closer in the beginning."

On the second Newcastle goal, he says: "It happened in the Bournemouth game and it happened today again. It is what it is after VAR decided. They know perfectly."

On the frustration of dropping points, he adds: "Always but it is a football game and the opponent is playing and they played good too."

"No questions, everything is fine,” he adds when asked what happened with Sam Barrett at full-time.

Guardiola reacts

Here’s what Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said to Sky Sports:

"Tight game. Chances. Entertaining game. At the end they scored two goals and we scored one. (Our performance) was really good in general. We had chances. In the second half we had more chances but unfortunately today we could not finish.

"It was good. Keep going. I know that the intensity and high pressing is really good and unfortunately we could not, in the second half when we had chances, they won duels. They provoked this kind of game and it was difficult."

On the VAR decisions, he adds: "I didn't see it. I didn't see it.

On Donnarumma's complaints, he says: "You see him complain and that is because something wrong happened. It happened the same at Bournemouth.

On the second half, he explains that “the momentum” was key.

“We had the momentum. We scored quick after they scored and then they scored again from a corner."

When asked what he said to Bruno Guimaraes at full-time, he replies: “I said how good he is (but that conversation) is for private situations. Everything is fine."

Harvey Barnes bags brace as Newcastle beat Manchester City in thriller

Harvey Barnes fired Newcastle to a welcome 2-1 Premier League victory over Manchester City with a quickfire double in a thrilling encounter at St James’ Park.

The former Leicester winger struck after 63 and 70 minutes either side of Ruben Dias’ equaliser to secure a first league success against City for head coach Eddie Howe at the 19th attempt.

It could hardly have been better timed with Howe’s men sitting in 15th place, just a single point above the relegation zone, before kick-off on Tyneside with a tough Champions League trip to Marseille to come on Tuesday evening.
