Follow live coverage as Brentford face Newcastle United today in the Premier League. Another top-flight season will be covered in full right here with The Independent, as reigning champions Liverpool look to fend off competition from Arsenal, Manchester City and more.

The race for the Champions League places should also be a compelling battle, with a fifth place possible for English teams. Manchester United’s latest rebuild under Ruben Amorim sets expectations high once more after a dismal season last time out.

Meanwhile, it’s Burnley, Leeds United and Sunderland who made it back to the elite after promotion last year and each will have hope they can make it more than a one-year stay. Follow the latest live action from the Premier League below:

Brentford vs Newcastle United

The full-time whistle blows at the Gtech Community Stadium as Brentford defeat Newcastle United 3-1. The hosts started the first half brightly, but it was the visitors who took the lead after Barnes produced a smart turn to fool two Brentford defenders before firing through the legs of Kelleher into the bottom-left corner of the net for his 50th Premier League goal. The Bees equalised in the second half after a long throw-in from Kayode caused mayhem in the Newcastle six-yard box, with Pope failing to clear away the danger and Botman inadvertently flicking on for Schade to nod home into an empty net. It got worse for the Magpies as Burn was sent off in the 73rd minute for bundling Ouattara over in the Newcastle penalty area. Thiago stepped up to slot the penalty into the bottom-right corner of the net. The visitors searched for an equaliser with 10 men and came close as Hall's low cross into the six-yard box was cleared off the line by Henry. The home side extended their lead in stoppage time as Thiago finished past Ramsdale after Thiaw inadvertently played the ball into the path of the Brazilian. The hosts generated 14 shots with six on target, reflected by an xG of 2.64, whereas the visitors created five shots with one on target, highlighted by an xG of 0.42. The result sees Brentford move up to 12th in the Premier League table, whereas Newcastle remain in 14th, two points above the relegation zone. Keith Andrews' side return to Premier League action after the international break as they visit Brighton, while Eddie Howe's side host Manchester City on 22 November.
