Trump news: President 'fires pollsters' over results as Fox News survey has him trailing every single major Democratic candidate

Donald Trump's former strategist Steve Bannon may be poised for a come back, which would be a pretty great thing for the populists who see in the president a potential champion of their cause.

That's according to a report in Yahoo News, which noted that Mr Trump has been saying some nice things about the man he put into exile for two years. Hint: If you're wondering why there is so much love, it's because Mr Bannon has been showering the man with compliments.

"I'll tell you one thing," Mr Trump told the news outlet in an interview earlier this year, and published today. "I watched Bannon a few times, four or five times over the last six months. Nobody says anything better about me right now than Bannon. I don't know."

Among the Supreme Court rulings out today is one that upholds a constitutional rule allowing states and federal governments to prosecute someone for the same crime.

The ruling has been closely watched because it could have an immediate impact on defendants in the Russia investigation, who may be pardoned by Mr Trump. If he does, this means that they could see charges at the state level, where Mr Trump does not have pardon authority.

Mr Trump and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have been in an odd back and forth recently, after the young New Yorker told ABC News she believes Democrats have "a very real risk of losing the presidency to Donald Trump."

Mr Trump then tweeted a citation of that quote, and said he agrees "and that is the only reason they play the impeach card, which cannot be legally used!"

Ms Ocasio-Cortez slapped back: “Mr. President, you’re from Queens," she tweeted.

“You may fool the rest of the country, but I’ll call your bluff any day of the week. Opening an impeachment inquiry is exactly what we must do when the President obstructs justice, advises witnesses to ignore legal subpoenas, & more.”

The White House National Security Council has called Iran's plan to enrich uranium "nuclear blackmail", and said that the threat must be met with "increasing international pressure" on the country, according to Reuters.

The Associated Press has reported that the country has a need for enriched uranium up to 20 per cent, which is just a step away form weapon-grade enrichment levels.

The comments come as the US and Iran have seen escalating tensions, with the US blaming the Persian nation for explosions that damaged two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman, near the Strait of hormuz, a critical shipping channel for oil.

The State Department has welcomed deputy Italian prime minister Matteo Salvini today, with a meeting between secretary of State Mike Pompeo and vice president Mike Pence on the schedule for the day.

Mr Salvini came to Washington for a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown soldier in Arlington National Cemetary, as he seeks to foster a close relationship with the Trump administration.

Mr Salvini is also set to attend a meeting with the group Americans for Tax Reform, which has wielded considerable influence in Washington and forced dozens of Republicans to sign pledges to never raise taxes in the US.
