Donald Trump refuses to say if he'll pardon Paul Manafort

The jury in the financial fraud trial of Donald Trump‘s former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, has found him guilty on eight counts of bank and tax fraud, but was unable to reach a consensus on 10 other charges.

The convictions mark the first trial victory stemming from the Russia investigation being led by special counsel Robert Mueller, and which is working to determine to what extent — if any — members of the Trump 2016 campaign colluded or worked together with Russian officials to impact the outcome of that election. At least four individuals who worked on the 2016 campaign have pleaded guilty to charges stemming from Mr Mueller's investigation.

While observers have suggested that the guilty verdict against Mr Manafort could impact others in Trump's orbit, the charges he faced were not directly related to his work for the Trump campaign — though some of the alleged actions brought up by prosecutors did occur while Mr Manafort worked for the campaign.

Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut says the White House "looks increasingly like a criminal enterprise" after the convictions of President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and personal lawyer Michael Cohen.

Mr Blumenthal said  that the verdicts show the probe led by special counsel Robert Mueller is "not a witch hunt or hoax" as Mr Trump has claimed. He says Mueller's team will continue following the facts as the investigation "circles ever closer to the Oval Office."

Mr Blumenthal says any talk of a pardon for Mr Manafort or Mr Cohen "should end now," calling it an abuse of power and possible obstruction of justice.

President Donald Trump has tried to distance himself from his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort's conviction on Tuesday on bank and tax fraud charges, saying it did not involve him.

"I feel very badly for Paul Manafort. It has nothing to do with me. Nothing to do with Russia collusion," Mr Trump said as he arrived in West Virginia for a rally Tuesday night.
