Tsunami waves hit Japan and Russia after 8.8-magnitude earthquake
Emergency sirens sound in Hawaii's Kailua-Kona as tsunami hits Russia’s Kuril Islands and Japan’s Hokkaido
An 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s eastern coast triggered widespread tsunami warnings and advisories across the Pacific, impacting regions from Hawaii and California to Japan and Russia.
Tsunami waves struck parts of Japan’s Hokkaido and Russia’s Kuril Islands, with a 1ft tidal surge recorded near Alaska’s Amchitka.
Northern California’s coast, including Crescent City, was placed under a tsunami warning, while more than 1.9 million people in Japan were asked to evacuate as a precaution.
Although initial waves in Japan were smaller than forecast, officials cautioned that larger subsequent waves could still arrive, and the earthquake ranks as the sixth strongest ever recorded globally.
