The announcement of the nomination for the new Supreme Court judge’s position will be made during primetime TV on Monday night by President Donald Trump.

The timing and approach of the announcement is unusual, and perhaps the media event becomes more important than the event itself. An announcement by news agencies and an official White House release seems more dignified, although of late most announcements seem to come via Twitter.

Whatever the outcome, hopefully the candidate who is nominated will be an acceptable choice for the whole of the country rather than one side. Maybe given the circumstances of the announcement it might be Judge Judy.

Laurels to The Independent for illuminating the seemingly unending tragedy in southern Syria and the plight of refugees stranded on the border with Jordan. The global community cannot remain numb to those mired in dispossession, displacement, gruelling destitution and political and religious disenfranchisement. What is more disheartening and nefarious is the fiery and propagandistic destruction of ancient shrines and sites. Syria has been renowned throughout centuries for its richness of diversity and cultural heritage.

Whichever party people normally vote for and whether they voted Leave or Remain in the EU referendum, the great majority will hope that a compromise is eventually agreed with the EU on Brexit that goes some way to placating all sides on this particularly difficult issue. The exception of course is the SNP leadership and their core support who none too subtly appear to want the worst possible outcome for Brexit. Nicola Sturgeon hopes to be able to exploit any perceived weakness in the UK to try to break it up. Nationalists should be unsurprised to find that those who value Scotland’s positive place in the UK, are more determined than ever to defend both the UK as a whole and Scotland in particular against those who seek any excuse to undermine them.

The photograph looks every bit staged. I assume everyone was encouraged to appear as if they were engaged in earnest conversation. And no resignations. Quelle surprise. How often does any politician resign on a matter of principle?

It is such a shame that Brazil have been knocked out of the World Cup. I am heartbroken. Brazil should have played better. I lived in Brazil some years ago and know of the passion of the country for the game. In Brazil, football is the most important activity. It’s a religion. Brazil’s football has always been sheer magic and beauty. Now Brazil’s charming football is being replaced with stronger and abler skills from Europe.

The country must be totally devastated, as are the fans of Brazilian football like me. Never mind, as Humbert Wolfe wrote: “If it must be so, let’s not weep nor complain. If I have failed, or you, or life turned sullen. We have had these things, they do not come again. But the flag still flies and the city has not fallen.”

President Donald Trump’s UK visit will begin on 12 July. Can the Glorious Twelfth this year commence a month early? And instead of shooting down defenceless red grouse, can one of these marksmen shoot down that orange red blimp?

What a disgraceful insult it is to Mr Trump and how typical of the egregious London mayor Sadiq Khan, to give his assent to it.

Imagine a cowardly American flying a blimp of our Queen in a nappy over Washington DC. He would be arrested. Only a wimp flies such a blimp.
