Letter: Why Unesco is our natural partner
Sir: As Britain's last permanent delegate to Unesco (1984-85), I strongly support Robert Maclennan's call (letter, 29 October) for the United Kingdom to return. There is at least one other important practical reason, in addition to those put forward by Mr Maclennan, why we should go back. Britain is pledged to promote effective post-UNCED (Rio conference on the environment) follow- up in the UN system. Unesco is a vital part of that system.
Its work on scientific and conservation aspects of the environment through its Man and the Biosphere Programme is unique and needs to be strengthened as part of implementing Rio. And Unesco is Britain's natural UN partner in promoting the Prime Minister's Darwin Initiative.
Yours sincerely,
JOHN GORDON
