Letter: People do vote for higher taxes

Sir: Your leading article of November 22 is wrong to assert that people who say they are prepared to pay higher taxes for better public services won't vote accordingly. Opinion surveys before the 1992 election showed three-fifths of those questioned ready to do so. The numbers voting for parties advocating such policies matched that proportion.

But first-past-the-post put the Conservatives in power on a 42 per cent minority. Yet again the British people got a government most didn't want, and tax policies most opposed.
