Letter: No green future with the CAP

Sir: For an answer to the question "How green is your party?" don't ask the parties' environment spokespeople: they're too well practised at saying what greens want to hear. The environment is affected by a whole range of other policies, so quiz politicians who have other remits. For example.

To would-be transport secretaries: According to official advice, new roads tend to generate more traffic. How large would your road-building programme be?

To shadow trade and industry ministers: Free trade and endless economic growth are ruining the planet. What is your alternative?

To defence spokesmen (spokeswomen are never allowed this brief): Does your defence policy rely on weapons of mass destruction, which would devastate the environment as well as humans?

To aspiring prime ministers: What is your number-one priority?
