Letter: Mellor, the media and morality

Sir: The tabloid editors, seeking to hound David Mellor from office on grounds of his alleged affair, might consider that the row they are generating about his activities is incomprehensible in any other European country, where such pastime is usually regarded as perfectly normal.

And his talents of mental rigour, toughness, capacity for hard work, verbal facility and humour are in short supply to any government, certainly this one. His absence would be felt.

And if he has been a hypocrite, he has no monopoly on this particular sin. These editors, who are showing interest, hitherto hidden, in the Bible might consider that the sins of the flesh are not necessarily considered as heinous as those of the spirit.

Yours faithfully,

TOM BENYON
