ANYONE WHO uses the inane expression "call a spade a bloody shovel" (Brian Viner on television, Culture, 28 November) has clearly never used either. They are two very different implements and, if Brian Viner doesn't believe me, he should try digging his allotment with a shovel and then have a go at loading gravel into a barrow with a spade.
