Sir: America can be blamed for many things, but not the Leyland cypress. This plant first appeared as a natural hybrid between Cupressus macrocarpa and Chamaecyparis nootkatensis in Montgomeryshire in 1888, so although both parents are North American species it is only fair to attribute blame to the Welsh.
