Letter: Laboured speech

Sir: Why do delegates at Labour Party conferences pronounce the word 'composite' differently from the rest of us? Most of us pronounce the last syllable as 'zit' but it appears obligatory at Labour (and trade union) conferences to pronounce it to rhyme with 'bite'. Perhaps this pronunciation was voted in at some previous conference; or do all delegates have the same speech tutor?

Yours faithfully,

STEPHEN J. GARRETT
