CONSIDERING Lucretia Stewart has written a book about the Caribbean, her ignorance in referring to the Windward Islands as 'banana republics' is lamentable ('Bananas are their only fruit', Sunday Review, 4 September). The term normally refers to Honduras, Panama, Guatemala, Costa Rica etc. The Windward Islands have never been republics but independent countries within the Commonwealth. I am sure many West Indians will be offended by this pejorative term for the Windwards.
