From Mr Humphrey Burton

Sir: I would not want your readers to assume from my wife's letter (13 June) that my solitary Armani suit is in any way connected with my feelings for the BBC's Director-General, John Birt.

I personally may well be an "Eighties leftover" but my suit most certainly is not. I bought it as a direct result of attending a Royal Opera performance, earlier this season, of Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte, for which Signor Armani did the costume designs.

"I want what Thomas Allen wore as Don Alfonso," I told the assistant at my local Emporio Armani, and that, Sir, is what I got.

Yours faithfully,

HUMPHREY BURTON
