The Independent celebrates its 18th birthday today in style. Our new compact format has revolutionised the world of newspapers, and we are welcoming new readers every day. After a troubled adolescence, The Independent is back on track. Veteran readers will have noticed some changes over the years, but one thing has remained constant: our free-thinking values. We are no less independent today than we were on 7 October 1986.

Of course, turning 18 also means that we are now old enough to vote. And now we must decide which party The Independent will put its cross next to in the coming general election...
