ACCORDING to the English Heritage Monitor, published this week by the English Tourist Board, these are the top 10 free-admission historic properties in England, based on the number of visitors in 1991:

1. Westminster Abbey: 2,250,000 2. York Minster: 2,250,000 3. Canterbury Cathedral: 2,250,000 4. King's College Chapel, Cambridge: 1,000,000 5. Chester Cathedral: 750,000 6. Buckfast Abbey: 535,000 7. Norwich Cathedral: 534,922 8. Salisbury Cathedral: 500,000 9. Winchester Cathedral: 450,000 10. Lincoln Cathedral: 420,000
