Tomorrow: And they're off... the Australian Grand Prix gets under way in Melbourne this weekend, kicking off the 2012 Formula 1 season. It makes pit stops in 18 different cities before ending in Sao Paulo in November (formula1.com).

Next week: In Berlin, conductor and director Christoph Hagel continues his pioneering operas in public places with Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro at the Bode Museum, on "Museum Island" in the middle of River Spree, until 27 May (smb.museum).

In The Diary: British Airways has announced a "Flight BA2012" pop-up venue to showcase its Olympic ambassadors, mentored by Richard E Grant, Tracey Emin and Heston Blumenthal. The gallery, cinema and restaurant will open on London's Shoreditch High Street (4-17 April). Tickets are £50 for entrance, champagne and a three-course menu (facebook.com/britishairways). In Devon, River Cottage will have The Pop-Up Hotel on site at Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's HQ (10 Aug-7 Sept). Luxury canvas tents cost £696 for a three-night B&B weekend stay (thepopuphotel.com).
