Done with spam and tracking? Proton Mail can solve both

Discover how Proton Mail protects your inbox from spam, tracking and unwanted ads

Spam clutters your inbox and wastes your time. But even opening legitimate emails can lead to a flood of unwanted messages. Proton Mail helps stop spam at the source by making it easy to create boundaries between services you use online. That way, a single data breach doesn't affect everything else. Proton Mail also protects you from shady email senders attempting to track your email activity.

Why does spam happen

(Proton)

Spam often starts when a third-party website you’ve signed up for suffers a data breach. Your personal details, including your email address, may be leaked or sold on the dark web. From there, shady senders can buy bulk contact lists that include your email to promote questionable products—or worse, try to scam you.

Proton Mail gives you the tools to protect yourself:

Email aliases let you hide your real address when signing up for online services. If one of those websites is breached, you can simply disable the alias and cut off any future spam emails.

Dark Web Monitoring alerts you if your personal data appears in a known data breach, so you can react quickly and secure your accounts.

Spam and email tracking go hand in hand

Not all spam comes from data leaks. Many marketing emails contain hidden trackers: tiny, invisible images that are loaded from a remote server when you open the message. These can reveal to the sender when you opened the email, where you were, and what device you used.

That data is then used to build a profile on you, resell your information, and send you even more unwanted emails.

Proton Mail’s research shows that around 50% of emails contain trackers, with more than 166 billion of these sent every day. Proton Mail blocks these trackers automatically, with no extra setup required. It also strips tracking parameters from links, so senders can't follow what you click on.

Advanced protection for your inbox

Proton Mail also includes a range of features to protect your privacy and secure your messages:

  • PhishGuard detects phishing attempts and warns you if an email seems suspicious. Link confirmation asks if you want to open an external link to limit the chances of you being tricked into visiting a malicious website .
  • Password-protected emails allow you to add a password and expiration date to sensitive messages, even if the recipient doesn't use Proton Mail.
  • End-to-end encryption means messages you send to other Proton users are encrypted on your device before they're sent. Only your recipient can read them.
  • Zero-access architecture ensures only you can access your data. Not even Proton can read your emails or files.

If you upgrade to one of Proton Mail’s paid plans, you will receive advanced email features, such as Dark Web Monitoring, additional email aliases, extra storage, custom email domains, and more.

You can also opt for the Proton Family plan to protect your entire family’s online privacy. You can add up to five other family members, and get 3 TB of total storage space, with access to all Proton services and features.
