COLOMBO DUMBOS R US: The curtain comes down on a winter of extreme discontent as Sri Lanka defeat Alec Stewart's men to record their first Test victory over England at the fifth attempt, the tourists' fifth successive Test reversal. Keith Fletcher blames the overloaded itinerary, Ted Dexter the under-trimmed chins.

Sheffield steels itself for a Wembley derby as Wednesday and United win taut replays to reach the FA Cup semi-finals. One of the younger Owls, Paul Warhurst, earns a place in the England squad to play Turkey in a World Cup qualifier. The wisest, Chris Waddle, earns one in all eyes save Graham Taylor's.

Taylor's previous employers, Aston Villa, get fresh at Old Trafford but a Mark Hughes equaliser allows Norwich to reclaim pole position in the Premier League with a 3-0 licking of luckless Nottingham Forest. The underdogs are still barking.
