‘Here we go again’: Andy Murray explains key to latest comeback victory over Tomas Etcheverry

Andy Murray pulled off another comeback after edging past Tomas Etcheverry over the distance at Indian Wells.

The Briton, 35 years of age and playing against the 23-year-old Argentine, advanced to the second round after three more gruelling sets (6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-4)

Murray was on court for three hours and 12 minutes. including 20 break points, converting just four of them in the marathon contest.

But Murray was relieved after prevailing at a venue he has tended to struggle at in the past, pinpointing his recovery skills after some poor decision-making in the first set.

“I really felt like I was in the driving seat for much of the match,” Murray told BBC Sport. “I was creating lots of opportunities but I just wasn’t able to capitalise. I made some poor decisions at times, but in the end did really well to get through that.”

“I’m not going to keep winning every three-set match that I play, but it’s been an amazing start to the year,” Murray continued.

“It was still a good effort to turn that around as the first set was extremely long and I was thinking ‘here we go again’. This is a place where I haven’t always played my best tennis so I was really happy that I managed to turn that around.”

Murray is now due to face Pablo Carreño Busta in the second round on Saturday.
