Jim Courier, the defending champion, went out of the Advanta Championships in Philadelphia yesterday after being beaten by Grant Stafford, of South Africa, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2; but Pete Sampras, the top seed, survived his second- round challenge against Jonas Bjorkman, of Sweden, 7-6, 7-6.
