Eddie Jones abuse condemned by Scottish Rugby after video of England head coach being attacked emerges
Jones insisted he would no longer travel on public transport after the incident
Scottish Rugby have condemned the behaviour of fans who called Eddie Jones a “bald c***” as he tried to get a taxi from Manchester Oxford Road the morning after England’s Grand Slam-ending defeat at Murrayfield on Saturday.
The Australian announced he would no longer travel by public transport after he was verbally and physically abused by inebriated Scotland fans as the celebrations from the 25-13 win over-spilled into Sunday morning.
In a video published by the BBC, Jones is shown posing for photographs with fans outside the station after getting the train alone from Edinburgh to Manchester before he is swamped by drunk fans who verbally abuse him and even open the door of his taxi to continue the tirade.
“Scottish Rugby is appalled by the verbal abuse suffered by Eddie Jones,” Scotland said in a statement. “The disgusting behaviour of those involved does not represent the values of our sport or its fans. The dignity Eddie and the England team showed on Saturday is in stark contrast to this ugly incident.”
It has also been reported that the incident in Manchester was not the only incident involving an altercation between Scottish fans and Jones as he travelled on to London.
The incidents came in the wake of former Scotland and British and Irish Lions captain Gavin Hastings saying of Jones that fans wanted to “rub his face in the dirt”.
“I'm a human being,” Jones said on Thursday. “I don't consider myself any different from anyone else, so for me to travel on public transport I thought was OK.
“I can't because it was shown what happens when I do. That's the world we live in. I was massively surprised. It wasn't comfortable.”
