Rugby Union: Dwyer favours UK for 1995

BOB DWYER, the Australian coach, yesterday expressed his support for the idea of England and Wales providing an alternative venue for the 1995 World Cup should South Africa prove an unviable proposition.

In Narbonne, France, for the Australians' game against a Languedoc Regional XV, Dwyer was reacting to Friday's admission by the International Board that it was seeking an alternative to South Africa owing to fears that political unrest there could wreck the event.

'I can't comment about the political situation in South Africa, I don't know much about it,' Dwyer said. 'But uninformed opinion, which mine is, would have to say that there are still some difficulties with staging the tournament there.'

As far as bringing the World Cup back to the British Isles for the second time in succession was concerned, Dwyer said: 'They did a fantastic job with the 1991 World Cup and they have the facilities, personnel and organisation to do even better.

'The United Kingdom makes all the sense in the world - we should take the tournament to the market place.'
