FLOODLIT RACING could be staged at Haydock Park early in the next Millennium.

Course executives are formulating a five-year plan incorporating the introduction of a straight seven furlongs, with floodlighting.

Richard Thomas, Haydock's managing director, said: "It is a rush for people to get to evening meetings, but if we floodlit the straight course we could run the later races on that course and therefore start the programme later and not have to say to racegoers at 9.00 o'clock `That's it'."

Harmonic Way, winner of the Vodafone Stewards' Cup, will step up to seven furlongs at Newmarket on Saturday. His trainer, Roger Charlton, is aiming him at the pounds 30,000 Joe Jennings Bookmakers Handicap.
