Jade Jones became Britain's first medallist at the inaugural Youth Olympics yesterday. The 17-year-old overcame Vietnam's Than Thao Nguyen in a sudden-death play-off to capture gold in the women's 55kg category in Singapore after the pair were locked at 6-6 following three dramatic rounds of tae kwon do.

Jones landed a kick to her rival's head six seconds into the extra period for a 9-6 win. "It's amazing, it's an Olympic set-up here so I'm now excited for London 2012," she said.
