More than 100 people have already been arrested in "preventive" operations before the London Olympics, the Home Secretary said yesterday, raising questions about civil rights.

Theresa May added that attempts to set up protest camps would not be tolerated during the Games – and that camps such as the one at St Paul's were viewed as a "threat".

"We have clarified and strengthened our policy on encampment-style protests at Olympic venues," Ms May said. "Action will be taken by the police using all available powers."
