The Olympic programme opens with the first two rounds of the 100 metres and the first round of the 800m, but the first track and field gold of the Games should be won by the Swiss Werner Gunthor in the shot put. He has nearly a metre to spare over his rivals, including America's Mike Stulce and the defending champion Ulf Timmerman of Germany.

The 20km walk is a contest of age and experience. The 1980 Olympic champion, Mauricio Damiliano of Italy, also last year's world champion, is challenged by a rising Spanish talent, Valentin Massana. Daniel Plaza could also give the home crowd something to shout about. The 10,000m men embark on the first leg of their two-stage battle, rejoined on Monday.

There are six golds to be won in the swimming pool and four at the velodrome, where a thrilling night is in prospect with the finals of the sprints, team pursuit, individual pursuit and individual points race all being contested. Fencer Tony Bartlett carries British hopes in the individual foil (preliminaries at 8.0am, final at 7.0pm).
