Nigel Mansell, making his last appearance before returning to Formula One, was third quickest in the opening practice session for today's Monterey IndyCar race. Mansell, who lapped the circuit in 71.071sec, said: 'The car felt pretty good at first, but then the handling went away. We drove a lot of laps but we've got to find out how to keep the handling for the whole race distance.' The Canadian Paul Tracy broke the track record to take provisional pole position. The 26-year-old from Toronto turned in a lap of 70.058sec, or 113.768mph. Tracy thinks he could go even faster. 'I got in only one clear lap,' he said. 'The car had good balance from the beginning.' Jacques Villeneuve, another Canadian and son of the late Ferrari Formula One driver Gilles Villeneuve, was second fastest with a time of 71.010sec.
