Colin Montgomerie believes a compromise might be the best way forward to accommodate the competing claims for the Ryder Cup captaincy of Darren Clarke and Paul McGinlay.

Montgomerie, who, it was announced yesterday, will inducted into golf's Hall of Fame in Florida next May, suggests a dual announcement is possible, emulating the move that saw Ian Woosnam and Sir Nick Faldo appointed for 2006 and 2008 respectively.

"They are both different characters," he said. "Darren has the stature. Paul is stronger on the detail side of things. We could see a situation where we announce two captains as we did with Woosie and Faldo."
