Great Britain’s expected victory in the mixed relay at the ITU World Triathlon in Hamburg failed to materialise as the team, featuring Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee, failed to finish.

Britain, who won the event for the past two years, led at halfway as Alistair (above) handed over to Non Stanford with a 17-second lead. But they received a 10sec penalty for an infringement by the Olympic champion before Stanford crashed towards the end of her bike leg. Germany won the event.

In the individual events on Saturday Jonathan Brownlee pipped his brother to victory, while in the women’s race Stanford was second and team-mate Jodie Stimpson third.
