Manchester City transfer news: Diego Godin turns down offer to sign new Atletico deal
City reported to have made a £28m bid
Diego Godin turned down a lucrative offer from Manchester City to stay with Atletico Madrid, according to reports in Spain.
According to Marca, Manchester City were willing to trigger the 29-year-old's €40million (£28m) release clause to bring the Uruguayan to the Etihad, but he turned down the chance to move.
The paper reports that City offered the centre-back around £4.5m (£90,000-a-week) to join; Godin will now likely see a wage rise and a new deal at Atletico having opted to stay with Diego Simeone.
Manuel Pellegrini has struggled to find a centre-back to partner club captain Vincent Kompany, with ageing Argentinian Martin Demichelis his most frequent partner after Eliaquim Mangala struggled following his big-money move from Porto last summer.
Godin has been a key part of Atletico's recent success, captaining the side to their first La Liga title in 18 years in 2014.
