Arsenal transfer news: Lucas Torreira speaks for the first time after signing for club on long-term deal
The 22-year-old has said he is excited for the season ahead
New Arsenal signing Lucas Torreira has said that he feels “calm and comfortable” after signing for the club from Sampdoria in Italy.
The 22-year-old midfielder, who played in all of Uruguay’s matches at the 2018 World Cup, on Monday signed a long-term deal with Arsenal.
He has been handed the number 11 shirt for the 2018/19 campaign and will join up with the squad in early August.
And in his first interview, Torreira declared that he had already been made to feel comfortable at the club and was looking forward to the future.
“I feel calm,” he told the official Arsenal website. “I am used to coping with this kind of thing in the best possible way. It's a very positive thing that people want to welcome me. It makes me feel comfortable. Now I am calm and I look forward to the future, which for sure will be very nice.
“I want to make the most of this opportunity life has given me. I am really looking forward to starting this new adventure.”
Torreira added that he was very proud of his performances at the World Cup, which excited a number of Arsenal supporters.
“I feel very proud of it, it all turned out great for me,” he added.
“I wasn't part of the team during the World Cup qualifiers, but eventually I made it to the World Cup. It was marvellous to experience World Cup moments with the Uruguay squad family. I tried to enjoy the World Cup as much as I could.”
