Venables completes signing of Okon

Paul Okon has completed his move to Leeds United after passing a medical yesterday afternoon. The 30-year-old Australian midfielder agreed a three-year deal at Elland Road on Friday and has now become Terry Venables' second signing, following the purchase of Nick Barmby.

The former Lazio and Fiorentina man played under Venables when he was in charge of the Socceroos and guided them to within one game of the 1998 World Cup finals. He has been targeted by Venables to help provide extra cover in midfield. Harry Kewell and Eirik Bakke, two players in his position, both spent time out injured last season.

The Bolton manager Sam Allardyce is giving the Monaco striker Wagneau Eloi the chance to join his Wanderers side as cover for Michael Ricketts. The 28-year-old forward flew in to train with Bolton on Sunday and turned out in a friendly at Barrow last night.

Eloi was one of the leading strikers in France a couple of seasons ago when he helped Lens chase the title, but a move to Monaco did not work out. With Bolton concerned about Ricketts' knee injury, Allardyce is surveying his striking options.

Bolton have been offered Fredi Bobic again by Borussia Dortmund, but even at a cut-price £8,000-a-week he may not be the ideal answer to Allardyce's problems. The free agent Chris Armstrong, released by Tottenham, is more interested in staying in London area moving to the north west.

The Manchester City manager Kevin Keegan is set to continue his summer rebuilding by signing the Algerian midfielder Karim Kerkar. Keegan is also interested in completing a cut-price £2m deal with Paris St-Germain for the former France defender Frédéric Dehu.

Kerkar has been on trial during the pre-season and performed well, scoring twice in a 7-1 win over Tranmere. He is available on a Bosman free transfer after his contract with France's Le Havre finished. Dehu has fallen from favour at PSG and is likely to jump at the chance of joining his former club colleagues Ali Benarbia and Nicolas Anelka.

A Football Association delegation led by the FA chairman Geoff Thompson and David Davies, director of international strategy, is to have talks with the Asian Football Confederation in Kuala Lumpur this week. It is hoped the talks will lead to more co-operation between the FA and Asian countries.
