Tottenham Hotspur vs Southampton: Defender Ryan Bertrand eyes England recall

Ryan Bertrand hopes that being a first-team regular in a successful Southampton side – the ninth loan move of his Chelsea career – will return him to the England reckoning for the first time since two substitute appearances in 2012.

“My ambition is not to just be involved, but be the England No 1 left-back,” he said.

Saints team-mate Nathaniel Clyne beat him into the squad last week, and Bertrand added: “It’s disappointing to not get the call. This is probably the first bit of consistency I’ve had in the Premier League, but it’s early days.”

Saints come up against their former manager Mauricio Pochettino when they tackle Tottenham away. “Maybe for all the way it went well for him here, it will take a bit longer at Tottenham,” Bertrand said, denying that team-mates who played under the Argentinian are more highly motivated than usual: “We are just treating it like any other game.”
