Tottenham 0 Real Madrid 2 player ratings: How did Gareth Bale fare against his former side?
The match took place at the Allianz Arena

TOTTENHAM
Vorm: Should have done better to keep out Bale's late goal. 6
Walker: As exciting as ever going forward but he is prone to acts of stupidity that can make him a defensive liability, as in giving away a free-kick to Marcelo in the left corner. 6
Alderweireld: Did his best to stem the tide in the first half, making sure when Tottenham had the ball they held it. 6
Wimmer: Struggled with the movement of Jese and looked rather too slow, both mentally and physically, to deal with Madrid’s attackers. 5
Rose: Criminally careless in allowing James the space to head in. Chelsea may want to reconsider telling Tottenham to name their price. 5
Alli: The only Tottenham player to impress in the first half, his nutmeg of Modric showed the youngster was not awed by the famous opposition. 7
Dier: On the basis of this showing Dier is simply not a holding midfielder. He was overrun on more than one occasion and found himself dragged too far back towards his goal. 5
Dembele: Left little mark on this game when given a chance to show what he could do in a front four, he too often picks the safe pass when there are options elsewhere. 5
Lamela: Skied the best chance of the first half well over after two minutes. He never settled from then on and it was no surprise he lasted just 45 minutes. 5

Eriksen: Spurs’ most likely goal-threat throughout, his in-play delivery continues to cause problems for any defence. 7
Kane: Scarcely touched the ball in the game as his colleagues could not get the ball to him. However in that instance he should be dropping deep to provide an option. 5
Vertonghen: Tottenham’s defence seemed more organised and confident with a Belgian duo, finding it much easier to repel Madrid. He may have benefitted, though, from the game losing any sense of momentum. 6
Bentaleb: Prior to a careless mistake to give Bale the second Bentaleb had looked strong and reliable, easily shielding Spurs’ back four. 6
Chadli: Provided more verticality to Tottenham’s attack, looking to run at Madrid’s defence and create goalscoring chances. 6

REAL MADRID
Casilla: Saved smartly on the rare occasions he had to. But in such a quiet game he had scarcely more than one or two moments to show what he can do. 6
Danillo: Ran the channels effectively, getting up and down whenever required to provide an outball on the right. His crossing left something to be desired though. 6
Varane: His well-organised, muscular defence left Tottenham with no way past, as he dominated his opponents in the air and on the deck. 7
Sergio Ramos: With Tottenham offering so little going forward it seems only right to mark him down for twice causing needless fights between both sides. Hardly what one would expect from a Madrid captain. 5

Marcelo: Learned from an early mistake that gave Walker the entire right flank to run into, shuttling back smartly to provide solidity to Madrid’s backline. 6
Kroos: A quiet game from Kroos, whose usually laser-like distribution was slightly off. Tottenham did nothing to punish him when he gave the ball away though. 5
Modric: An elegant display from the Croatian playmaker, never allowing himself to be ruffled and dictating Madrid’s play from deep. 7
Bale: It didn’t seem like it would be the best of reunions for the Welshman, whose touch deserted him on more than one occasion. But then he pounced on a Bentaleb mistake, firing in a 25-yard drive to remind Spurs fans what they are missing. 6
Isco: An excellent delivery for James’ goal showed everything that has made him so valued in spite of the Galacticos around him. Always seemed to find his colleagues in space. 7
James: His goal capped an excellent 45 minutes for the Colombian forward, who ably supported Jese and kept finding space around Tottenham’s backline. 7
Jese: Thoroughly impressive as Madrid’s line-leader, his movement and pace dragged Tottenham’s defensive duo out of position time and again. 8
