Ryan Giggs will turn down the opportunity to join Jose Mourinho’s backroom team at Manchester United, according to reports.

Giggs, who worked as an assistant manager under Louis van Gaal, could end his 29-year-long association with the club following the Dutchman’s sacking, though United are yet to offer confirmation on his future.

Van Gaal was relieved of his duties on Monday, just two days after leading his side to FA Cup glory, following an otherwise substandard campaign.

According to The Sun, Mourinho is keen to retain Giggs as part of his staff, as he prepares to make his mark on Old Trafford.

Giggs, however, is believed to be unwilling to serve under a third manager, having also deputised during David Moyes’ calamitous spell two years ago.

The former United winger, who acted as a caretaker boss following Moyes’ dismissal in 2014, is reportedly ready to try his hand at management full-time.

Giggs was pictured leaving United’s Carrington training ground on Monday morning, ahead of the news that Van Gaal and three other backroom staff members had been sacked.

Albert Stuivenberg, another of Van Gaal’s assistants, was also dismissed, as was Frank Hoek, his goalkeeping coach, and Max Reckers, one of the club's performance analysts.

United are expected to make a full statement at 1.00pm.
