Pep Guardiola not thinking about breaking Premier League records and focused only on clinching the title

Beyond the title, City need six wins from their remaining nine games to break Chelsea’s 95-point record and eight wins to become the first team to smash 100 points

Pep Guardiola says that all that matters to Manchester City is to become champions, and that he is not chasing records. The Premier League leaders are within four wins of the title after beating a supine Chelsea 1-0, although the Catalan did promise that his side would keep playing the same way regardless. That could mean they end up breaking those records anyway. Beyond the title, City need six wins from their remaining nine games to break Chelsea’s 95-point record, eight wins to become the first team to smash 100 points, and 21 goals to break Chelsea’s goal record of 103.

“What really matters is to be champions,” Guardiola said. “I never spoke with the players about the records. I never spoke we have to win the two games to achieve something. Stoke we are going to try and play like we play all season. After, at the end, we will see. We are not going to play for the records. Records are always a consequence of what you have done but they are not the main thing.”

Conte said that he couldn’t have foreseen a season as sensational as this.

“Before? No way. No way, no. Who could believe it? I think if you ask the players, the players neither. In terms of not just the results but the way we played, today was another demonstration. Same desire as at Stamford Bridge. That is what pleases me the most. To have the distance, 25 to Chelsea, 33 to Arsenal, 18 to Tottenham [Hotspur] is a lot. Tottenham, Liverpool and [Manchester] United they made a good result, a good pace. We are so far so good in terms of we drop points but after a lot of wins in a row but especially I think it is a consequence of the way we play today. The way we play today is a bit similar to what we have done.”

Guardiola meanwhile praised Sergio Aguero’s contribution, and how his all-round game has evolved.

“Since we were together here with Sergio I think the last month, 2 motnh is the best Sergio I have season. not just scoring goals, but he doesn’t lose one ball. He make a movement for runs in behind, he is the first guy to make a high pressing, to help that second line be more comfortable with the ball. I am so pleased, ok he didn’t score it’s not a problem he will score in the future, but he did really well.”
