Champions Manchester City begin the defence of their Premier League crown with David Silva making a welcome return to the side.
The Spain international didn't start in the woeful Community Shield defeat to Arsenal last Sunday, but quickly made City look more of a threat after coming off the bench.
Manuel Pellegrini has opted for Stefan Jovetic and Edin Dzeko in attack with Sergio Aguero struggling for fitness and Alvaro Negredo out injured.
Newcastle have given a debut to new striker Emmanuel Riviere who joined the club from Monaco for a fee in the region of £6m.
