Liverpool vs Brighton result: Player ratings as visitors upset champions at Anfield

Liverpool

Caoimhin Kelleher – 7: Twenty-two-year-old had little to do in the first half but made a string of important saves in the second. Was very unlucky for Alzate’s goal.

Andy Robertson – 6: Offered plenty of energy on the left as usual but little incision.

Jordan Henderson – 6: As is becoming less and less surprising, the midfielder performed admirably at centre-back.

Nat Phillips – 6: Looks increasingly comfortable in the Reds’ starting XI and was unfortunate to see his attempted clearance hit Alzate, then Trossard, then the Liverpool net.

Trent Alexander-Arnold – 5: Was caught unaware as Burn was found at the back post in the lead-up to Alzate’s goal, unfortunately undermining what was an otherwise decent showing.

Thiago – 6: Oozed composure during Brighton’s best spells of pressing. His deliveries into the visitors’ box were not the sharpest, though.

James Milner – 7: At 35, the midfielder still somehow managed to be everywhere at once, it seemed.

Georginio Wijnaldum – 6: Had bright moments but couldn’t make the difference. Was hooked after the break as a result.

Xherdan Shaqiri – 5: Didn’t look like making any breakthroughs and was replaced in the second half.

Roberto Firmino – 6: Held up the ball effectively to bring his team-mates into play, but his passing could have been slicker at times.

Mohamed Salah – 5: Things did not click for the Egypt forward after he looked to be back to his best last time out.

Substitutes: Origi – 5; Oxlade-Chamberlain – 6; Jones – 6.

Brighton

Robert Sanchez – 5: Had nothing at all to do in the first half. Made some questionable decisions and poor attempted clearances in the second half.

Ben White – 7: Untroubled by Shaqiri in the first half. Still untroubled when the Swiss swapped sides.

Lewis Dunk – 8: Made a great read to intercept a low cross early in the second half, immediately before blocking a powerful Firmino shot from close range.

Adam Webster – 8: Stayed resolute as Brighton came under increased pressure as the game wore on. Made some good reads.

Steven Alzate – 7: Had a bit of luck with his goal, but won’t care one bit.

Pascal Gross – 6: Not as involved as he could have been, but offered glimpses of his undoubted talents.

Yves Bissouma – 7: Impressed in spurts, both with his passing and ability to win the ball. Fought through some apparent discomfort, too.

Dan Burn – 7: Completely miskicked a clear chance to score after a deflection set up the defender. Made up for it with his role in the opener, however, and improved as the match progressed.

Leandro Trossard – 7: Exhibited tremendous control and strength with one run up the wing, only to be outnumbered. Was not short on confidence at all.

Neal Maupay – 6: Saw his best chance blocked when the striker really should have shot much sooner.

Solly March – 7: Great crossfield ball found Burn at the back post to set up Brighton’s goal. Went off injured in the second half.
