Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp donates €5,000 to long-term care of fan Sean Cox

Jurgen Klopp has donated €5,000 (£4,400) to the long-term care of Liverpool fan Sean Cox, who suffered life-altering injuries in an attack outside Anfield in April.

Everton defender Seamus Coleman and Reading midfielder David Meyler, both Republic of Ireland internationals, also donated €5,000, according to the gofundme.com webpage set up to support Mr Cox’s recovery.

The 53-year-old father of three travelled from Ireland on the morning of Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final against Roma, where he was attacked before kick-off and was badly beaten.

Earlier this month Roma fan Filippo Lombardi, 21, was cleared of being involved in the joint attack on Mr Cox, but was sentenced to three years in prison for a separate charge of violent disorder. Another man has been arrested in Rome and is awaiting extradition.

Mr Cox is receiving treatment in Dun Laoghaire near Dublin, having been left barely able to talk and unable to sit up unaided following the attack. His gofundme page has so far raised €120,000 of its €2m goal.

Fan group Spirit of Shankly will be collecting donations at the home game against Cardiff on Saturday.
