Battle of Stamford Bridge: Man for man
CHELSEA
Carlo Cudicini: Save denied Morientes in 11th minute but could do little to stop the goals. Mark: 5/10
Mario Melchiot: Failed to cope solo with threat of Rothen. Passing and movement OK. 5
William Gallas: Composed under pressure. Tidy clearance work. Pre-empted Giuly movement to limit threat. 6
John Terry: Throwing himself at Morientes shot to deflect it on to the post typified dogged contribution. 6
Wayne Bridge: Defended well, then scampered, crossed (or laid off) overlapped and tracked back. 6
Jesper Gronkjaer: His over-hit cross became an accidental goal but lapses detracted from its value. 4
Frank Lampard: Central figure again. Less commanding than a fortnight ago. Shots varied in quality. 6
Geremi: Early urgency, verging on impatient (hence missed shot) turned to more constructive distribution. 5
Joe Cole: Quickly into his stride, blocking, harrying, passing. Missed a shot, less effectively involved later on. 5.
Eidur Gudjohnsen: Headed on to crossbar when he should have scored. Errors marred lively display. 5
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink: Pacy, adventurous and threatening, he did plenty of selfless running, creating and crossing. 6
Substitutes:
Glen Johnson: On for Melchiot in 64th minute to add progressive element. 5
Hernan Crespo: Lacked chances to shine.5
Scott Parker: Lacked sparkle. 5
MONACO
Flavio Roma: Valuable contribution included denying Hasselbaink and Lampard in the first half to keep Monaco competitive. Mark: 6
Hugo Ibarra: The man on loan from potential final opponents, Porto, defended solidly and bundled in well for 2-1. 6
Julien Rodriguez: Kept tabs on Chelsea's forwards to poor effect in the first half but did force play out wide. 6
Gael Givet: Hoofed the ball forward until nerves settled and his closing-down game became more of a feature. 5
Patrice Evra: Overlapped well with Rothen to provide options on the flanks. Deservedly booked for clattering Gronkjaer. 6
Sébastien Squillaci: Did more defending than anticipated, to good effect in the first half, before being substituted. 5
Lucas Bernardi: Skinned by Bridge several times early on, he was quietly efficient without ever sparkling. 5
Edouard Cissé: His arrival in the first leg sparked something that wasn't evident by his presence here. 5
Jérome Rothen: The night's best player. Quick, tricky, creative, persistent and downright dangerous. 8
Ludovic Giuly: Had a poor, quiet game, failing to make much of note. 5
Fernando Morientes: Flicks, tricks and movement. Hit a post and scored goal. 7
Substitutes:
Miroslav Plasil: Added creativity to counters. 5
Dado Prso: Introduction showed visitors' confidence. 5
Shabani Nonda: Had little time to make impact. 5
