Transfer hits and misses from last season
A new signing, especially one from overseas, is always something of a gamble, even with modern managers able to consult everything from computer games to multi-million pound scouting networks.
Yet it is still surprising that, as last season, so many transfers failed. Even paying a fortune is no guarantee.

Last season's two most expensive recruits ended the campaign with the jury still out. Another, Amir Zaki, looked the deal of the decade at Christmas, by May Zaki was exposed as just another troublesome Carlos Kickaball.
In the end, taking fees and likely wages into account, the deal of the year was not for an exotic striker, be he Brazilian, Bulgarian or Egyptian, but for a 36-year-old goalkeeper who has been playing in England for 13 years.
