Leeds United defender Dominic Matteo is the shock inclusion in Scotland's squad to face San Marino and Croatia in World Cup qualifying matches next month.

Matteo, 26, was born in Dumfries but has spent all but the first four years of his life in England.

And Matteo, who has an Italian father and English mother, has even represented England at under-19 and under-21 levels.

But those games were just friendlies, which means he is still qualified to play for Scotland.

Scotland manager Craig Brown said former Liverpool star Matteo was approached earlier this year and was keen to play.

That was still the case after he was named in a full England squad on two occasions but never played.

Newcastle striker Kevin Gallacher, Celtic midfielder Paul Lambert and Craig Burley of Derby rejoin the squad after having to pull out of the Latvia game through injury.

Also returning are St Johnstone goalkeeper Alan Main and Manchester City defender Paul Ritchie.

Ritchie had been left out of the previous squad because he was not getting regular first team football at Rangers, but he has since completed a £500,000 move to Premiership newcomers City.

Colin Hendry retains his place in the squad, which travels to San Marino on October 7 and Croatia four days later, despite not being a regular at Coventry.
