Euro 2016: England's embarrassing corner woes stretch back six years

Harry Kane? Wayne Rooney? Jordan Henderson? England’s set-piece headaches at Euro 2016 have been a constant source of embarrassment for the national side with Roy Hodgson coming under particular criticism for the decision to stick Kane on corner duty.

But the issue runs much deeper than this year’s championships and stretches back an astonishing six years during which England have failed on 64 counts to convert a set-piece into a goal.

Rather amazingly, England have not scored from a single corner in a major tournament since 2010 when Matthew Upson headed home Steven Gerrard’s delivery against Germany in the World Cup (England lost 4-1 in controversial circumstances against the hosts).

This inability to capitalise on the set-piece was evident in Monday night’s Euro fixture against Slovakia in which England wasted 11 opportunities to score from the corner spot.

England have been awarded an impressive 26 corners across all three group games but have struggled to threaten their opponents from the corner-spot.

Roy Hodgson’s side aren’t the only ones though. Only three goals have been scored from the corner flag so far across the whole of the tournament.

Nonetheless, England have desperately struggled to fill the void left by the likes of David Beckham and Steven Gerrard who were well practised in the art of a set-piece delivery.

For all his attacking threat, Harry Kane hasn’t quite managed to bend it like Beckham yet.
