Dave Jones' future as Cardiff City manager will be discussed at a board meeting early next week. Jones' job is on the line after Cardiff fell short in the Championship play-offs for the second successive season after their 3-0 semi-final home defeat to Reading on Tuesday.

Jones, who led the south Wales club to a final defeat against Blackpool at Wembley last year, faced chants of "sacked in the morning" from his own fans during the final stages of the humiliating defeat at the Cardiff City Stadium. Now Cardiff's chief executive, Gethin Jenkins, and the club's millionaire Malaysian owners will hold a meeting – which will include Jones – to thrash out his future.

Jenkins said yesterday: "We are utterly disappointed. We set our target of getting into the Premier League and the club won't apologise for having that ambition. We have had many highs but we have fallen at the final hurdle. The bottom line is we didn't perform.

"Everyone's future will come under scrutiny but it is too early to say [whether we will change the manager]. I spoke to Dave after the game and the conversation was raw and emotive. So we decided to leave it for a couple of days to reflect on the season."
