United to fight it out with Liverpool in FA Cup

Manchester United will take on Liverpool in January's FA Cup third round. The bitter rivals will meet in the only all-Premier League tie in the last-64 draw, which was made at Wembley yesterday.

The two most successful clubs in English footballing history, who are tied on 18 league titles each, will meet at Old Trafford. United are the most successful team in the FA Cup, having won it 11 times.

FC United of Manchester, the club formed in protest against the ownership of Manchester United by the Glazer family, will host last year's beaten finalists Portsmouth if they overcome Brighton in their second round replay on 8 December. Arsenal, ten times FA Cup winners, host Leeds United. Current Cup holders Chelsea also face a home tie with a Championship club, Roy Keane's Ipswich Town being the visitors.

Roberto Mancini will be in competition with his mentor Sven-Goran Eriksson as Manchester City travel to Leicester City. Mancini played for Eriksson at both Sampdoria and Lazio and later became Eriksson's assistant at Lazio.

Moreover, both managers will be re-united with former clubs. Eriksson will meet Manchester City for the first time since his dismissal as manager in June 2008. Mancini played briefly for Leicester City in 2001.

There are a few unfamiliar trips for Premier League clubs. Newcastle United will travel to Stevenage FC of League Two. Everton are away at Scunthorpe United and Wolverhampton Wanderers will go to Doncaster Rovers. Fulham host Peterborough, Blackpool travel to Southampton, and Sunderland await the winners of the clash between Notts County and Bournemouth.

Aston Villa have a potentially difficult trip to Sheffield United as Gerard Houllier returns to the competition that he won as Liverpool's manager in 2001.
