Vincent Kompany could make surprise return when Manchester City face PSG next week

Vincent Kompany is in contention to make a surprise return from injury to face Paris Saint-Germain in Manchester City's Champions League quarter-final second-leg next Tuesday.

The City captain has been out of action with a calf problem since the round of 16 second-leg against Dynamo Kiev three weeks ago.

But despite initial fears that he could miss the rest of the season, Kompany has returned to training in recent days and City manager Manuel Pellegrini admits that the defender could play against PSG at the Etihad next week.

"We'll see him during the week and what he improves," Pellegrini said. "The last few days he's worked very well.

"Now we must test him with more intensity and its very difficult to tell now."

Kompany has been plagued by injury problems in recent seasons and the Belgian has missed two thirds of City's competitive fixtures this term.

But with City in with a strong chance of reaching the Champions League semi-finals for the first time after earning a 2-2 draw in Paris, Pellegrini is set to give Kompany until the final moment to prove his fitness, even if he is unable to play in the Premier League clash at home to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.
