Milan cut gap at top as Kaladze adds to Inter's woes
Milan last night cut the gap at the top of Serie A to four points as they inflicted further humiliation on Internazionale in the San Siro derby. Kahka Kaladze's 70th-minute goal was enough to add to Inter's strife though many of their fans were not present to see it having boycotted the fixture in protest at the club's Champions League exit. In their place was a banner that read: 'We're not here, because you've never been'.
Juventus can restore their lead to seven points with four games left if they win at Cagliari today.
In Germany even preparations for the World Cup have been put in the shade by a Bundesliga campaign which has suddenly reawoken. The defending champions, Bayern Munich, after taking just 12 points from a possible 24, are now only four ahead of SV Hamburg.
Hamburg go to Duisburg today with their mood encapsulated by the midfielder David Jarolim who said: "If we can win our last five matches we'll win the championship." Bayern, who are at home to Arminia Bielefeld today, did reach the German Cup final - in which they will play Eintracht Frankfurt - by defeating the giant-killers St Pauli in midweek . But their general manager, Uli Hoeness, warned: "Resting on our lead is not an option."
Another leader to have faltered is Lyon. Their dip in form cost them progress in the Champions' League and the French Cup but there was no sustained challenger in Le Championnat. They can thus secure a record fifth successive title by defeating Paris St-Germain in Paris tomorrow. They will travel as champions if Bordeaux fail to beat Lille today.
In Spain the chase is on for the automatic Champions' League place behind Barcelona. Valencia and Real Madrid are level on points, with Osasuna one behind. Tomorrow, Valencia take on Espanyol, midweek winners of the King's Cup, but struggling in La Liga, at the Mestella. Valencia may field Amedeo Carboni, 41 last week, but have Pablo Aimar in hospital with viral meningitis. Real Madrid have David Beckham back to play Getafe, but Ronaldo is out. Osasuna host Malaga.
