Jose Mourinho claims Manchester United's Champions League exit is 'nothing new' for the club

Jose Mourinho claimed Manchester United's surprise Champions League exit was “not something new” for the club after witnessing his side eliminated from the last-16 by Sevilla.

Two Wissam Ben Yedder goals in the space of four second-half minutes laid waste to United’s hopes of progression and a quarter-final spot in this competition for the first time in four years.

Mourinho said he was disappointed to see his side eliminated but, having scored European victories of his own at Old Trafford in the past, he claimed that such exits were nothing new for United.

“I sit in this chair twice in the Champions League and knock Manchester United at home at Old Trafford,” he reminded journalists after the final whistle.

“I sit in this chair with with Porto and Real Madrid with Manchester United out, so I don't think it is something new for the club.

“Of course, being Manchester United manager and losing a Champions League tie at home is a disappointment.”

Mourinho eliminated Sir Alex Ferguson’s United from the Champions League last-16 on two occasions - with Porto in 2004 and with Madrid in 2013.

The United manager went on to claim that “everything has to change” for United to compete with European football’s elite again.

Though a bristling Mourinho refused to go into specifics, he suggested that part of the solution would be further investment in the playing squad.

“Everybody spends money, right? Not just us, no? It's a natural process, every team invests,” he said.
